Study links mobile device overuse to unhealthy outcomes

You’ve heard that smartphone use may have potential health hazards, right? Well, it may be worse than we thought.

In findings from a literature review, it was reported by Helio, that each additional hour per day of mobile device use is associated with an increase in BMI (body mass index).

Furthermore, excessive mobile screen time was also associated with

  • insufficient sleep,
  • greater daytime fatigue,
  • depression and
  • other adverse health behaviors like illegal substance use.

All of this is from a study presented at ENDO 2022.

The findings prompted study authors to say, in a press release, “We’re not asking to throw devices out the window.” They added, “We’re advocating for moderation, balance and real-life engagement.”

Sounds like wise advice for all of us.
