Science behind the cracking of joints unclear

The Wall Street Journal reports that the science is not very well-established regarding what is actually happening when people crack their spine, neck, knuckles or other joints and make a popping sound.

According to the Journal, many believe that there is a misalignment called a subluxation in the joint and that a sudden movement can lessen the tension of that misalignment, but it is unclear from a scientific perspective.

The article notes that there have been cases in which patients cause permanent nerve damage to themselves by forcing their joints to crack.
