New microwave energy procedure stops excessive sweating

In “Aches & Claims”, the Wall Street Journal reports that a new procedure approved in 2011 by the Food and Drug Administration helps people plagued by excessive sweating – called ‘hyperhidrosis.’

The MiraDry procedure, developed by Miramar Labs Inc., is a non-surgical procedure that uses microwave energy to provide long-term relief from sweating by destroying sweat glands.

Two or three hour-long sessions may provide relief for a year. However, the procedure costs approximately $3,000 for two sessions and is not covered by health insurance.
