Modern Eugenics: 95% of Spanish Down’s Syndrome Children Aborted After Prenatal Testing

LifeSiteNews.com is reporting that in Spain abortion is being used for eugenic purposes to eliminate the “unfit” – specifically children with Down’s syndrome.  Recent statistics show that almost 95% of Spanish babies diagnosed with Down’s syndrome are aborted.
My Take?
The same is happening in the U.S. and, I suspect, any other country in which prenatal testing is common place.
For example, in Canada, where there are no legal restrictions on abortion, it has been reported that 80-90 percent of mothers whose children are diagnosed with Down Syndrome children decide to abort.
Spain’s National Association for the Defense of the Right to Conscientious Objection has joined with pro-life voices around the world who have warned that prenatal diagnosis, combined with legal abortion, has added up to a eugenic pogrom against the developmentally disabled.
LifeSite says, “The eugenic program against people with Down’s syndrome is accepted and well established in the medical community in most western countries, while researchers work to develop more effective means of detecting the genetic disorder in utero.”
I’ve cared for dozens of people with Down’s Syndrome, and without exception, these are exceptional people. Even more so, I’m stunned by their spiritual sensitivity and how much they bless those who know and love them.
And, the problem is only going to get worse.
Last month, researchers in Hong Kong reported they had developed a highly accurate test that can detect the presence of the genetic abnormality that causes Down’s syndrome in the blood of pregnant women.
Do not be surprised to see medical groups in this country proposed that this test be provided as routine screening for all pregnant women.
What is my recommendation for those who see unborn children as a gift from God and who are blessed with a pregnancy? Simply turn down the screening tests and accept the gift that your child is.

St. Francis of Assisi said, “Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear nor ignorance.” Too bad, Niels, that you have none of the former (charity or wisdom) and too much of the latter (fear or ignorance). Know that I’ll be praying that you have an opportunity to meet and get to know one of these remarkable individuals – who carry the same image of God that you do. I rather favor the attitude of charity and wisdom shown by Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, who said this about her beautiful baby boy with Downs: “Trig is beautiful and already adored by us. We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives. We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed.”
