Hypnosis benefits kids with IBS or chronic stomach pain

Reuters reports that according to a study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, hypnosis may alleviate chronic pain in the stomach or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in youngsters.

In nearly two-thirds of 52 children with either chronic stomach pain or IBS who were followed for five years after undergoing six sessions of hypnosis in addition to self-hypnosis at home, researchers found that the children had minimal or no pain in the abdomen whatsoever.

In contrast, only 20% of children who underwent standard therapy for chronic stomach pain and IBS reported being pain-free or nearly pain-free after a similar period of time.

Children who underwent hypnosis also reported fewer problems with their bowels and less bloating.
