Healthy sleep patterns reduce risky heart arrhythmias

Here’s another reason to get a good night’s sleep. According to a new study, healthy sleep patterns may be associated with reduced risk for potentially life-threatening heart irregularities called arrhythmias. One of the researchers explained that sleep deprivation may disturb the autonomic nervous system which has been associated with the start and the continuation of arrhythmias.

The study, of over 400,000 adults in Great Britain, and found that those with healthy sleep factors had the best heart health.

They defined healthy sleep factors as:

  • seven to eight hours of sleep per day;
  • never, rarely, or only sometimes having insomnia;
  • no self-reported snoring; and
  • no excessive daytime sleepiness.

The more of these factors a person had, the greater their risk of a dangerous arrhythmia.

The researchers say their study emphasizes the importance of improving the overall sleep behaviors in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.

The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
