Eating breakfast regularly reduces mortality risks

A recent study found that eating breakfast regularly, especially when the meal included more than 25 grams of fiber, was linked to lower overall and cardiovascular mortality, compared with not eating breakfast. The researchers merged data from almost 6000 adults aged 40 years and older and included more than 12 years of follow-up.

The results build on previous research showing the cardiovascular benefits of eating breakfast that result from lowered levels of inflammatory biomarkers.

Other studies have found skipping breakfast increases the risk of being overweight or obese and developing diabetes.

One of the study’s authors said, “Though breakfast is commonly considered to be the most important meal of the day, many people skip it. Skipping breakfast may set up a series of health problems.”

The bottom line is, as I’ve told you before, eating a healthful breakfast regularly promotes cardiovascular health and decreases all-cause premature mortality.

Said another way, eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen, and dinner like a pauper.

The findings were published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine.
