Does your favorite sunscreen cause cancer?

According to ConsumerLab.com, “Scientists have discovered at least two different compounds in sunscreen that are carcinogens — benzene and benzophenone.” Carcinogens are substances that can cause cancer.

The problem with these substances in sunscreens is, “Neither of these compounds appears on product labels but may be introduced during product manufacture and/or created by chemical reactions with the sunscreen itself, with more produced over the life of the product!”

ConsumerLab has compiled a list of sunscreens (and after-sun products) that have been found to contain benzene, including several that have been recalled by their manufacturers for this reason.

I’ve long been a proponent of folks using facial moisturizing cream in the morning that has sunscreen mixed into it to prevent long-term skin damage such as wrinkles or skin cancer.

Now, with the help of ConsumerLab, I know, and can tell you, “Sunscreen ingredients in many facial moisturizers are not known to be safe.”

You can see ConsumerLab’s list of those that are potentially problematic and those that are safer options here.
