Doctors and Faith

A listener asked me, “As patients, can we ask our doctors about their spiritual beliefs?”

You may feel intimidated to ask a doctor such a personal question, but I believe you should receive medical care that takes into account your social, emotional, relational, cultural, AND spiritual beliefs.

If your spiritual faith is very important to you, you may want a doctor that shares your beliefs—or at least respects them. Discussing your doctor’s faith may actually strengthen your trust and relationship with them, and that’s always a good thing.

A patient should also feel free to ask how a doctor’s beliefs and practices relate to his or her medical care. And a winning healthcare professional should be willing to let you know. I have faith in that.
