Some Pharmacies Believe Birth Control Pills Cause Unrecognized Abortions

ABC News is reporting that a small, but growing number, of pharmacies are refuse to sell brith control that they believe may cause the unrecognized abortion of an unborn child at the earliest stages of development.
My Take?Pharmacists for Life says that the movement is growing. The effort picked up steam a few years ago when individual pharmacists began refusing to dispense Plan B, the so-called morning after pill, for moral, ethical, or religious reasons.
Brian Bundy is one of those pharmacists. “This country was founded on religious beliefs and the freedom to have those beliefs,” Bundy said.” Therefore, they should carry over to our jobs.”
Advocates who support access to birth control claim women who are denied will seek out unsafe alternatives.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Allowing healthcare professionals to opt out of prescribing or dispensing drugs they believe to be harmful or fatal to the unborn will in no way prevent women from getting or taking abortifacients.
Planned Parenthood says, “We certainly believe that all pharmacies have a responsibility and duty to make sure that FDA-approved contraception is available and accessible on site.”
But many independent pharmacy owners disagree. They argue that as private businessowners, they have the right to decide what they sell.
One pharmacist in the story is quoted as saying, “That’s my right. So women certainly have rights in this country, and I’m not out there trying to take anything away from them. I’m just using my God given right and the freedom of the United States to sell what I want in my own pharmacy.”
If often surprises my patients and readers to learn that the birth control pill always carries with it the risk of causing an unrecognized abortion of the unborn child. I’ve written about this in the past. You can learn more at The Growing Debate About the Abortifacient Effect of the Birth Control Pill and the Principle of the Double Effect
