Medical prices “vary wildly” by location, studies show

USA Today reports that the “frustrating reality of the medical marketplace” is that prices “vary wildly from city to city and hospital to hospital for all sorts of medical care.” The most recent “of many studies examining the issue” looked at prices for angioplasties.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and Blue Health Intelligence analyzed three years of company claims data in 86 of the 100 largest metropolitan areas.

After “controlling for the overall costliness of an area, researchers still found huge differences from city to city and within the same market.”
