Family Update

As the days begin to shorten, and the nights become palpably cooler here along the front-range of the Rockies, we’ve had some time to reflect on three major event in our life this summer: (1) the loss of a daughter, (2) the near-loss of our home, and (3) the loss of Barb’s mom.

We’ve chronicled all three events in our last two newsletters, but now we’ve had time to pray about, think and meditate through, discuss, and to begin to heal and recover.

We’ve not sorted out all of the lessons we think the Lord has/had for us, but we’ve certainly realized how much we love and depend upon Him and each other — relationships that have only grown more amazingly deeper and sweeter through these emotional peaks and valleys.

As we head into what is likely the last one-third of our lives, we’re grateful all the more to Him and each other. Eternal life, love, and dear friendships … what could be more valuable?

Barb and I are teaching a Marriage Conference in Colorado Springs

For those of you who live in the Colorado Springs area, Barb and I will be teaching a marriage conference at the Glen Eyrie Conference Center on Friday and Saturday, September 13-14. The conference will be based on our book, His Brain, Her Brain: How divinely designed differences can strengthen your marriage.

Our small group leader wrote this note about the Conference:

The Conference is more about understanding the opposite sex and thus one will drastically improve their marriage. It is open and encouraged for singles as well as couples. We feel anyone 18 or older will benefit.

Friday evening will start around 6 pm (to be finalized) with coffee and dessert available while Walt and Barb teach. That evening is expected to end around 9:30 pm. Saturday will go from about 8:30 am to around 7:30 pm. A continental breakfast, lunch and nice dinner will be included. A nice personal picture will be taken during the day.

Walt and Barb will have copies of their book there for sale and will be happy to autograph them. It is not necessary to read the book prior to the seminar.

Please feel free to share this with all your clients/friends. Anyone who wants to sign up should call 719-481-2409. The cost is $175 per couple.

Publishing Update

1) Medical News You Can Use

I find it hard to believe, but this is my 2,619th blog. My first post was on March 31, 2008. And, for four years I posted a once or twice daily “Medical News You Can Use” blog. However, I’ve been on a hiatus since the end of 2012.

But now, starting tomorrow, on Monday, September 2, I’ll be posting a new blog each weekday. The blog, which I’m hoping will be short, quick to read, fun, and pithy, is being co-written and produced by my dear friend, Patrick Dunn. Patrick and I worked together on my radio and TV features, “Focus on Your Family’s Health,” that were syndicated around the country from 2002-2004. Most blogs will contain hyperlinks to their sources. Although available initially only in written form, in the near future, you’ll also be able to listen to each in a podcast format.

I’m initially writing and recording these blogs for SHINE.FM, a Christian music station that broadcasts across the Chicagoland area. I’ll be joining my  friends, family expert, Dr. Bill Maier, and relationship experts, Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott, in providing a daily blog and podcast for SHINE.FM.

If you’d like to hear these one-minute broadcasts on a station in your area, just let me know the station and a contact. My hope and prayer is to syndicate them around the county.

I do hope these new blogs will be a blessing for you, your family, your friends, and others in your faith community. And, I hope you’ll help me spread the word to those in your sphere of influence.

2) The Ultimate Girls’ Body Book

I’m awaiting the final edits of The Ultimate Girls’ Body Book: Not-so-silly questions about your body , which is still scheduled for release in December.

Letter From a Grateful Reader

One of the great joys that a writer experiencing is receiving a note from a grateful reader. Our friends at the Fryemont Inn in Bryson City, NC, recently wrote:

Hi Dr Walt! A guest emailed this letter to us and asked that we forward it to you!! Hope things are going well for you and Barb!

So, here’s a wonderful letter (edited for length and to protect the identity of the author) that brought me much joy:

Dear Dr. Larimore,

You have become a very wonderful part of my life. If I may, I would like to share some of that briefly. Thank you, Doctor.

I have just finished your last book about Bryson City, NC (I suspect he’s referring to Bryson City Secrets). I first saw your book in Bryson Train Station bookstore (Gil’s Book Sale). I bought the original book just simply to learn more about the wonderful city. I found your book so much fun to read (I’m a retired Firefighter/Medic)

As I began to read your first book, I never dreamed it would become a very special part of my life for the next few years and probably influence the rest of it.

I read, with great interest and enjoyment, as I followed your travels from the Hemlock Inn, which I visited the very next year to get a feel for more of the book. We had already driven to Deep Creek, The Hospital, obviously the train depot, and so many other sites. We have stayed at the Turkey Creek Campground every year and will do so as long as I am able.

I also got a very big kick out of your “initiation” by the Fire Department at the Almond boat Ramp and the Bridge.

This past October, my new Bride and I stayed at the Fryemont Inn on our honeymoon because of your descriptions it and the folks who run it. Thanks to you.

I just wanted to tell you, that through these years, following your books, I have felt like a part of your “Extended Family”, following yours through your children’s explorations, problems, blessings and traumas, your work with the high school football team activities. (My daughters were born with Learning disabilities as well as physical problems – scoliosis with one).

Doctor, most of all, I would like to thank you for sharing the events through your book and those of your children’s, though some VERY sad and traumatic for them, as a Christian, I shared your anger as a dad, husband and your turmoil over the directions you needed to go with this.

I felt compassion for you and pray that someday, your children’s experience and pain will somehow ease through your sharing their story!

In the beginning, finishing the first book (I suspect he’s referring to Bryson City Tales), I couldn’t begin, to understand why you would EVER leave this wonderful town, having made my decision about 5 years ago to retire to Bryson myself, until the end, when you shared the real reason.

Doctor, I end with tears in my eyes … not for the ending of the story of your sharing with us, but for the end of the series of your books about Bryson. It has meant that much to me to follow your story.

Thank you so much for a wonderful presence in my life, for your sharing the incidents of which made you WHO you are as a man, a husband, a DAD, and most importantly as a Christian. It has helped me through the last few years, become a better Christian, a better Dad, and a better husband, listening to your stories and experiences. I’ll miss your thoughts and works. Thanks Doc!

P.S. Ironically, as I mentioned to you, my plans (were) to move to Bryson City upon my retirement. However, my Dad was diagnosed with 2nd stage Alzheimers Disease and Demintia(sic), upon our return from our Honeymoon, my bride and I have had our turn at having our faith challenged by God … we were forced to move in with him and it appears my retirement plans for Bryson won’t be realized. It has NOT weakened my faith, but has in fact made it stronger and I didn’t realize THAT until my step son was making fun of me and my belief in my GOD and trying to make me realize God didn’t exist. I pray YOUR faith will help ME keep MINE going through my trials with him. Thank you Dr. Larimore and God Bless.

No, thank you, dear reader, for blessing me. And, thank you, Lord, for another small glimpse of what you can accomplish as you direct my writing!

Events of the last month

  • Aug 12-15, I was in Tulsa serving as a visiting professor at the In His Image Family Medicine Residency. I’m always blessed by the amazing residents and dedicated faculty and staff with which I’m honored to work.
  • Aug 16-18, I traveled to Williamsburg, VA, where I co-taught a “Grace Prescriptions” conference at the Community Chapel on Saturday. This was the second of three planned “beta conferences” that will occur before the release of this new course to the public. The feedback was superb and will make the course even better.
  • Aug 21, I attended a Board Meeting of the Life Network in Colorado Springs. I love the ministry and the dedication of this Board. Good folks all.
  • Aug 28-31, we flew to Baton Rouge, rented a 16-foot truck, loaded it with some of Barb’s mom’s gifts to Barb, then commenced to make a 1300-mile, two-day drive back to Colorado Springs. The country we saw across west Texas and New Mexico was beautiful and we so enjoyed our time together. But, it was a long drive!
