How dangerous is getting less than five hours of sleep a day?

Health reports, “Getting five hours of sleep or less at night could put older adults at a higher risk of developing multiple chronic problems.”

Which ones? This list includes such killers as

  • cancer,
  • diabetes,
  • cardiovascular disease,
  • stroke,
  • kidney disease, and
  • mental health disorders.

This is based upon a 25-year, 7,864-person study published in the journal PLOS Medicine.

In fact, people ages 50 and older had at least a 30% higher risk of multimorbidity when their sleep totaled five hours per night or less, compared to those who slept at least seven hours.

The findings underscore the importance of maintaining good sleep habits as people age.
