A mom’s diet during pregnancy significantly affects her child’s long-term health

A rather shocking Harvard University study is reporting that a woman’s poor nutrition during pregnancy can be detrimental to her child’s health into their teens!

The mom’s poor diet can fairly significantly raise the risk of her child growing into adolescence with

  • a higher body mass index (indicating overweight or obesity),
  • asthma,
  • type 2 diabetes, and
  • orthopedic problems.

The Harvard University study reported that “Women should be made aware of how important a healthy diet is during pregnancy.”

“It is important to counsel women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant on the importance of a healthy diet during pregnancy,” added one of the researchers, Dr. Monthé-Drèze.

“In particular, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consider a Mediterranean diet, which may not only benefit their own health, but may also help their child maintain a healthy weight.”

A Mediterranean-type diet that focuses on

  • fruits,
  • vegetables,
  • oils,
  • vitamin D, and
  • omega-3

can reduce the risk of obesity and other health issues in adolescence.
