Watch out for pre-diabetes

About 1 in 3 adults and 1 in 5 adolescents in the U.S. have prediabetes and most are unaware. To help limit progression to diabetes you must be diagnosed if you’re at risk. All it takes is a simple and inexpensive blood test. Check an A1C or fasting blood glucose.

Guidelines vary but usually screen starting at age 45 or younger for adults at high risk, such as those that are overweight or obese plus have at least one more risk factor such as hypertension.

Also, screen kids after the onset of puberty or age 10 and up, whichever comes first, if they’re overweight and have at least one other risk factor, such as a family history of type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.

Rescreen at least every 3 years if results are normal.

If pre-diabetes is diagnosed, your doctor can help you prevent progression to diabetes with aggressive lifestyle changes, especially diet and exercise, and oral medication if needed.
