Taking small breaks from sitting may help heart and metabolic health

Does lunch in front of a computer make us eat more?

Two of my recent blogs warned of sitting too long in front of a computer at work:

Now Bloomberg News reports that “taking small breaks from sitting down such as standing for phone calls or walking to see colleagues may trim office workers’ waistlines and help their heart and metabolic health.”
This is based upon a study published in the European Heart Journal.
Investigators “drew on data from almost 4,800 volunteers outfitted with devices that tracked their activity for seven days as part of the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.”
The researchers found that “the more activity breaks people took, the smaller their waists and the lower the levels of a blood marker linked to inflammation.”
I hope this will encourage you to increase your physical activity at work. Obviously, every little bit helps.

    I have a free program on my computer that monitors how long I’ve been “at it.” Keeps track of my keyboard and mouse time. If I’ve been constantly at it for 45 minutes, it locks my computer and tells me to take a break. I love it. Especially this time of year. (Tax accountant – tax time)
