I received this email asking a question I frequently receive from young Christian couples trying to decide about which birth control to consider. My answers to him are IN CAPS:
(A mutual friend) referred me to you when I approached him with a question about a information my fiance received from a doctor regarding a birth control pill. … I appreciate you help in this matter as we have a deep desire to honor the Lord above all things but are hearing mixed reports.
The crux of the question boils down to this: Are there any (birth control) pills that you know of that do not work as abortifacients?
NOPE. AS THE AUTHOR OF THE LARGEST SYSTEMATIC REVIEW ON THE TOPIC IN THE MEDICAL LITERATURE, I CONCLUDED: This article evaluates the available evidence for the postfertilization effects of oral contraceptives and concludes that good evidence exists to support the hypothesis that the effectiveness of oral contraceptives depends to some degree on postfertilization effects. However, there are insufficient data to quantitate the relative contribution of postfertilization effects.
IN OTHER WORDS, THE POTENTIAL ABORTIFACIENT EFFECT OF THE BCP IS ALWAYS THERE. BUT NO ONE CAN SAY HOW OFTEN IN MIGHT OCCUR.
AS I WRITE IN ANOTHER ARTICLE ON THIS TOPIC:
… even if the effect is rare, that there are so many millions of women on the Pill. Therefore, even a very rare effect could abort countless preborn children. Further … the abortifacient effect can potentially occur to any woman who is taking the Pill; e.g., that when a woman takes the Pill that she is playing a “form of Russian roulette with her preborn child.” … the longer a woman takes the pill, the greater the chance she has of the Pill causing an unrecognized abortion.
but are effective with preventing sperm penetration and ovulation. I am not a fan of the pill in general, but my fiance has had nothing close to a regular cycle lately and we do not have the time to learn and make good use of NFP in our first months of marriage.
The doctor recommended to her (by a 3rd party) gave her some crazy projections for this medication. She told (my wife) that #1 this pill will NOT allow her to drop an egg,
WRONG. ACCORDING TO ONE WELL-DESIGNED STUDY, WOMEN ON THE BCP WILL OVULATE BETWEEN 12% AND 19% OF THE TIME. SEE MORE ON THIS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST.
#2 it does not inhibit implantation, but actually prepares the body for pregnancy,
THE PDR (PHYSICIANS DESK REFERENCE) IS VERY CLEAR ON THIS MATTER. IT SAYS THE FOLLOWING, FOR ALL BCPS AND FOR ALL HORMONAL CONTRACEPTIVES). BY THE WAY, THIS QUOTRE IS FROM MY ARTICLE ON THE TOPIC:
… the presumption that these pill-induced endometrial changes reduce the chance of implantation and increase the chance of an unrecognized, pill-induced abortion of the preborn is so well-accepted in the medical world that the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) approved product information for the Pill in the Physicians” Desk Reference36 (PDR) says, “Although the primary mechanism of action is inhibition of ovulation, other alterations include changes in the cervical mucus, which increase the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus and changes in the endometrium which reduce the likelihood of implantation.” (EMPHASIS MINE) … this is an FDA admission of the potential abortifacient effect of the Pill.
AGAIN, YOU (AND YOUR DOCTOR) CAN READ MY ARTICLE ABOUT THIS.
SOME DOCTORS WHO BELIEVE THE PILL DOES NOT INHIBIT IMPLANTATION SINCERELY BELIEVE THEY ARE RIGHT. THEY ARE SINCERELY WRONG. PSYCHIATRISTS CALL THIS A DELUSION: A FIXED FALSE BELIEF.
HOWEVER, MANY, MANY DOCTORS HAVE JUST NEVER BEEN TAUGHT THE TRUTH. THEY’VE NEVER ACTUALLY LOOKED AT THE DATA. I WAS ONE OF THOSE DOCTORS (IN THE PAST).
#3 that it helps prevent cancer.
YEP, THIS IS TRUE, BUT AT THE EXPENSE OF POTENTIALLY KILLING AN UNBORN BABY.
The name of the pill is BEYAZ and I was wondering if you could tell me if this is true or not, or if there is any such medication.
NOPE. ALL BCPS WORK THE SAME WAY.
If the doctor is not being honest with us, I would love if you could recommend a female doctor for (my wife).
MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE GENDER OF THE DOCTOR WOULD BE SEEING A DOCTOR TRAINED IN MODERN SCIENTIFIC NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING.
I PARTICULARLY LIKE FOLKS TRAINED IN THE NAPRO METHOD (WHICH USES THE CREIGHTON MODEL OF FERTILITY CARE. YOU COULD VISIT THE NAPRO WEBSITE AND FIND WEB PAGES LEADING YOU TO CERTIFIED TEACHERS OR MEDICAL CONSULTANTS TO SEE.
Lastly what would you suggest for where we are at if indeed we don’t use any BCP. I am guessing condoms since we both are virgins.
ONCE YOU LEARN THE CREIGHTON MODEL, YOU WILL BOTH KNOW WHEN YOUR WIFE IS FERTILE.
CATHOLIC TEACHERS WILL EMPHSIZE ABSTINENCE DURING THE FERTILE DAYS.
MOST PROTESTANT TEACHERS WILL SAY SEX DURING THE FERTILE DAYS IS OKAY AS LONG AS YOU PROPERLY USE TWO FORMS OF BIRTH CONTROL. FOR EXAMPLE, A CONDOM FOR THE MAN AND A BARRIER FORM OF BIRTH CONTROL (FEMALE CONDOM, ANTI-SPERM CREAM OR FOAM OR SUPPOSITORY, SPONGE, ETC.) FOR THE WOMAN.
Sorry this is long, but this is really important for us to get this right.
IT’S PRETTY IMPORTANT FOR YOUR UNBORN CHILD, ALSO.
Neither one of us wants a child in the first year, but really want to have kids!
WHAT IF GOD WANTS YOU TO GIVE YOU HIS GIFT OF HIS CHILD IN THE FIRST YEAR???
We are praying God’s will but trying to plan to work with what we feel is His plan for us.
HIS WORD SAYS MUCH ABOUT HIS PLAN FOR US, INCLUDING (1) CHILDREN ARE A GIFT FROM THE LORD, OFFSPRING ARE A REWARD FROM HIM (PSALM 127:3) AND (2) THIS DAY I CALL THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH AS WITNESSES AGAINST YOU THAT I HAVE SET BEFORE YOU LIFE AND DEATH, BLESSINGS AND CURSES. NOW CHOOSE LIFE, SO THAT YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN MAY LIVE (DEUTERONOMY 30:19).
Thanks for you help and all that you are doing for our nation in this challenging arena. I know you must get a lot of these. I wish the church spoke out more on this.
I eagerly await your response.
AH, BUT WILL YOU EAGERLY RECIEVE IT?
CHOOSE LIFE, AND HE WILL. THAT’S HIS PROMISE.
HERE’S ANOTHER BLOG I’VE POSTED ON THE TOPIC: More Evidence That the BCP Causes Unrecognized Abortions
