Wednesday’s Ask Dr. Walt — The Lowdown on Yogurt

Dear Dr. Walt,

I eat yogurt with active cultures every day. Do I still need to take a probiotic supplement?

—Yogurt Fan in Oklahoma

Dear Yogurt Devotee,

Although yogurts with active culture may be teeming with healthful organisms used as starter cultures (such as Lactobacillus bulgaricusand Streptococcus thermophilus), these are not necessarily probiotic organisms, that is those that survive passage through the stomach and populate the gut for beneficial effect.

The bottom line, if you want or need probiotic organisms, especially the specific bacteria that might be needed for any particular problem, you’ll need to get them from a separate product or purchase a yogurt to which probiotic organisms have specifically been added.
