Wednesday’s Ask Dr. Walt — Morning Sickness

Dear Dr. Walt,

What are your recommendations for eliminating nausea and vomiting in pregnancy?

—With Child in Wisconsin

Dear Expectant One,

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

As Scripture teaches, “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him” (Ps. 127:3, NIV).

But “morning sickness,” as it is frequently called, is no fun at all — and it’s experienced by more than half of all pregnant women.

It surprises many folks to learn that only about one-third of “morning sickness” occurs in the morning. About a third occurs in the afternoon or evening. And, about a third of women have it all day!

I had the privilege of caring for pregnant mothers for over 20 years (delivering over 1,500 babies), and during that tenure, I would tell my patients, “I do notwant you to experience anymorning sickness during your pregnancy.”

Following my advice, the vast majority did not!

Prescription anti-nausea medications appears to be a safe and effective, but many pregnant women prefer to try non-prescription products first and this has led to my most popular blog post ever, “My Recommendations for Eliminating Nausea and Vomiting (Morning Sickness) in Pregnancy.”
