Study finds thyroid supplements may be dangerous

The Los Angeles Times “Booster Shots” blog reports on a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Thyroid Association, which examined 10 brands of over-the-counter “thyroid support” dietary supplements and found “nine contained an animal hormone.” In addition, “the amount of hormone in the pills varied widely and often exceeded the doses usually prescribed. One supplement had no T3 or T4.”
Thus the authors of the new study caution consumers “about taking these pills.”
I have no disagreement with their recommendations.

Walt, is there a Thyroid supplement for underactive thyroid that you would recommend?

    • Hi Jennifer,
Certainly NOT over the counter. Not only for the quality reasons outlined in the blog, but also for cost reasons. The prescription products are $4 per month or $10 per three months. In other words, as little as $3.33 per month for pharmaceutical grade levothyroxine … can’t get an OTC for anything near that.

    Doc Walt,
I take Synthroid already. What about Iodine???
Thanks for your VERY informative blog. It’s been a real blessing.
