Fit over 50 Update — Walking Benefits Your Health

In my and Phil Bishop’s book, Fit over 50: Make Simple Choices Today for a Healthier, Happier You, we write in Tip #12 — Move!:

Research, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, reported how the Cleveland Clinic studied more than 122,000 patients from 1991 to 2014, putting them under treadmill testing and later recording mortality rates.

They reported a clear connection between exercise and a longer, healthier life. “Being unfit on an exercise stress test had a worse prognosis, as far as death, than being hypertensive, being diabetic, or being a current smoker,”

Cleveland Clinic cardiologist and study author Wael Jaber told CNN. “We’ve never seen something as pronounced as this and as objective as this.” 

He added that lack of exercise “should be treated as a disease that has a prescription, which is called exercise.”

Tip #12 — Move!

Now a new study supports the long-term benefits of walking.

Adults who participated in a walking program that used tracking pedometers had fewer cardiovascular events and a lower risk of fracture, compared with control groups, according to a study in PLOS Medicine.

Data showed people in the walking program had sustained increases in physical activity of about 30 minutes per week of moderate-to-vigorous activity after four years.

“Strong evidence exists that physical activity is protective for a wide range of health conditions, and inactivity is claimed to be the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality,” Tess Harris, MD, MSc, of the Population Health Research Institute at St. George’s University of London, and colleagues wrote.
