Fit over 50 Update — Giving is good for YOUR health

In my and Phil Bishop’s book, Fit over 50: Make Simple Choices Today for a Healthier, Happier You, we write:

Steve Wilson, a psychologist and self-proclaimed “joyologist,” says, “There is a kind of unhappiness that cannot be repaired by getting, because it requires giving. There is a kind of dissatisfaction, disappointment, and absence of joy that is remedied by giving something out, doing something for others… Happiness is an inside job that consists of… remembering who you are (precious), finding your source, laughing often, serving with love.”

We all know giving helps and pleases others, whether it’s giving gifts at Christmas, volunteering during the holidays, offering emotional support to those around us, or donating to worthy charities. But did you know that scores of studies show that giving is also good for the giver — it literally boosts your physical and mental health.

St. Paul and his Lord both recognized this. Paul wrote:

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Acts 20:35
