Fit over 50 Update — Start Moving, Live Longer!

In my and Phil Bishop’s book, Fit over 50: Make Simple Choices Today for a Healthier, Happier You, we write:

English cleric and theologian John Wesley (1703–1791), a cofounder of Methodism, wanted his family, friends, and followers to enjoy healthy lives. In 1747 he penned “Primitive Physick, or An Easy and Natural Method of Curing Most Diseases.” He defines physic as “the art of healing.” In this treatise he suggested 37 rules for living a balanced life and preventing disease—rules that involve all four wheels of health. These ia my favorite: A due degree of exercise is indispensably necessary to health and long life. Walking is the best exercise … The open air, when the weather is fair, contributes much to the benefit of exercise.

“But,” you may say, “I’ve never been one to exercise very much. Is it too late to start?” A new study answers that question:

Beginning or maintaining exercise in mid-life may be associated with longer life, researchers say

Reuters reports, “Even if they were inactive during their younger years, middle-aged and older adults who get at least the minimum recommended amount of exercise each week usually live longer than their sedentary counterparts,” research has indicated.

In other words, sitting too much kills!!!

The findings of the 14,599-participant study were published online in the BMJ.

The current recommendations are 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week. And, IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE ALL AT ONCE.

Two minutes here, five minutes there — it all adds up!
