Fit over 50 Update — Who wants to be “frail”?

As simple a choice as improving your nutrition can have substantial benefits. According to one report, “A diet quality score based on the PURE study, which advocates eating more of seven key foods—fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fish, dairy, and non-processed red meat—has been linked to lower premature deaths and reduced cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in at least three large independent studies.” But, there’s another amazing benefit.

A poor diet increases risk for “frailty”

Reuters reported a study suggests that “when older people eat a poor-quality diet, they may be increasing their odds of becoming frail.”

The study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society, found in over 2,000 robust or “pre-frail” adults aged 70 to 81, “people with poor-quality diets were almost twice as likely as those with high-quality diets to become frail, and a medium-quality diet was associated with a 40% higher risk of frailty.”

The findings also showed total protein intake, animal protein intake, and total calories consumed had no significant effect on frailty risk.
