COVID Vaccine and Aborted Fetus Cells — Part 1 of 3

The Christian Medical and Dental Associations (CMDA) have sent to its members a couple of notices on the COVID vaccine and aborted fetal cells. Here’s part one (of two) I’ve adapted for you. Feel free to share this with family, friends, or others in your faith community.

The COVID-19 vaccine is being developed through Operation Warp Speed. There are six leaders to develop, manufacture, and distribute 300 million doses of a safe vaccine in 2021:

  • Moderna’s mRNA vaccine
  • Pfizer’s mRNA vaccine
  • AstraZeneca’s adenovirus vector vaccine
  • Johnson & Johnson’s (Janssen) adenovirus vector vaccine
  • Novavax’s vaccine
  • Sanofi’s vaccine

Of these six leaders, three are completing Phase 3 trials:

  • Moderna’s mRNA vaccine
  • Pfizer’s mRNA vaccine
  • AstraZeneca’s adenovirus vector vaccine

The vaccines by Moderna and Pfizer are produced without any ethically problematic steps.

However, the vaccine by AstraZeneca is generated in part using a fetal cell line derived from an abortion in 1972.

I should also note that Janssen manufactures its vaccine with the assistance of a proprietary fetal cell line created from an abortion in 1985.

The CMDA Ethics Statement on Immunization includes the following:

Continued use of a cell line developed from an intentionally aborted fetus poses moral questions and must be decided as a matter of conscience, weighing the clear moral obligation to protect the health of our families and society against the risk of complicity with evil.

CMDA encourages the use of and endorses the further development of medically effective and ethically permissible alternatives that do not raise the question of moral complicity.

Additional resources on the ethical status of COVID-19 vaccines are available here.

  1. Lowell Sensintaffar MD says:

Many therapeutics we use today are tainted with historical atrocities. Bayer developed and manufactured ZyklonB. Shall we avoid Bayer aspirin now? Shall we choose something other than penicillin because if the Tuskegee experiments? But what troubles me most about CMDA’s position is the apparent lack of regard for the public health of under-resourced countries. The hard fact is the mRNA vaccines are out-of-reach of most developing countries because of costs and cold chain logistics. As an American, I have the luxury of making the choice CMDA proposes. Not so for a significant part of the world. I’ll also point out that using these cell lines did not cause the death of a single unborn child. But depriving poor nations of an inexpensive, easy-to-transport/store vaccine (e.g. AstraZeneca) will cost many lives.

  2. Hi Dr. Sensintaffar,

Under CMDA policy, and in line with the Physicians Resource Council of Focus on the Family, the Catholic Medical Association, and others, individuals in ANY country or territory could ethically administer or take most any vaccine, including a “more ethically tainted” COVID vaccine (such as the Astra Zeneca or any other adenovirus COVID vaccine). Their cry is for manufacturers to avoid placing ethical or moral landmines in the path of consumers and parents.
