Bryson City Seasons — Facing the Music

This is from the thirty-seventh chapter from my best-selling book, Bryson City Seasons, which is the sequel to Bryson City TalesI hope that you’ll enjoy going back to Bryson City with me each week and that if you do, you’ll be sure to invite your friends and family to join us.

At the next Swain County General Hospital medical staff meeting, all doctors were present and accounted for. There were no items listed on the agenda under new business. However, when the chief of staff, Ray Cunningham, called for new business, Ken Mathieson slowly stood up.

“Dr. Cunningham, I’m sorry to have to do this again. But I must.”

“What’s on your mind, Ken?” asked Ray.

“It’s come to my attention that there has been a serious breach of medical ethics in our hospital, and I would like to bring a formal complaint to the medical staff.”

I began to feel sick. Only last year Dr. Mathieson had asked for Rick and me to be expelled from the medical staff. I had a sneaking suspicion he was behind the allegations about the nursery. And now here he was up to his old tricks. It didn’t take long for my suspicion to be confirmed.

“I’d like to charge Dr. Larimore and Dr. Pyeritz with a breach of ethics.”

“I second that charge,” blurted out Dr. Bacon.

“I call the question,” exclaimed Dr. Mitchell.

“What’s the charge?” cried Rick, standing to his feet. “You can’t do this again!”

I’m sure I was red-faced and caught totally off-balance. This was wholly and absolutely unexpected. Why hadn’t Ray or Mitch let us know this was coming?

Then I realized all the men were smiling. Ray was snickering.

Dr. Mathieson answered, “The charge is failure to properly babysit. I move that these men lose their privilege to babysit. I further move that if they should babysit, they do it under the preceptorship of Mrs. Larimore or one of the other competent spouses of an active member of this medical staff.”

Dr. Bacon seconded the motion while laughing hysterically.

Ray called out, “All in favor say ‘aye’.”

There were “ayes” all around, while the other doctors were laughing hysterically, and as a result there were only four dry eyes in the house.

“We’ve been had, partner,” whispered Rick.

I smiled and nodded my head in agreement.

The other doctors, still laughing and snickering, slapped us on the back as they left.

“Those scoundrels planned and rehearsed the entire ambush,” I muttered to Rick.

After the other doctors left the conference room, we were left alone with Mr. Douthit, who was still wiping his eyes and trying to smother his laughter.

“Hope you boys didn’t mind that bit of humor on your account.”

Rick commented, “I guess it was pretty funny.”

“Indeed, it was,” Earl commented. Then he became serious. “But I’ll tell you this. That couldn’t have happened just a year ago. I think they like you boys. I think they consider you part of the team. I think your honeymoon is over, and I think this marriage is going to last. Congratulations!” He stood and left.

Rick chuckled. “Guess we had it coming, didn’t we, Walt?”

I smiled. My thoughts returned to the evening Louise brought Scott home to us. Compared to the horrible round of possibilities, this embarrassment was a small price to pay.

After the lights were out that night, I turned to hug Barb. Instead of turning toward me, as she usually did, she turned away—as she did only when she was frustrated or angry.

“Honey, we’ve already talked this through. I’ve told you how sorry I am. This was all my fault. I was a terrible babysitter. I know that. And I promise it will never happen again.”

Barb was quiet. She didn’t say a word or move a muscle.

“Honey, is there anything I can do to make this up to you?”

Barb instantly turned over to me. “Yes, there is!”

“Name it, honey. Just name it.”

“Will you be in the Miss Flame contest?”

There was a long, long silence as Barb waited. I had been had—big-time. I had been had, and I had no one to blame but myself. I nodded my head in silent assent.

She laughed in delight as she hugged me and said, “And to all a good night!”
