Men and women truly see things differently

There are still some, particularly ardent feminists, who claim that men and women are innately the same and that gender differences are environmentally acquired. As one researcher wisely observed, “those who still believe this all share one characteristic in common — they are childless.” Now, another study reveals what virtually all of us instinctively understand and appreciate, males and females are as different as night and day. Family Update

Barb and I had a lovely month at home together for the Christmas holidays. We enjoyed being off the road for a bit and fellowshipping with friends and our church family.

During this time I was able to make significant inroads in finishing the manuscript for my first solo novel, tentatively called Hazel Creek. It’s a story about five young sisters who are orphaned in the Smoky Mountain wilderness of western North Carolina in the 1920’s and have to fend off their family farm from an unscrupulous lumber baron.

Speaking of orphans, this month Barb and I have an exciting mission trip we’ll be taking to Ethiopia. We’ll be involved in providing health care for a group of orphans in the northern part of the country. (details below in “Upcoming Events”)

His Brain, Her Brain published in Spanish and in an audio book

Barb and I were delighted to hear that our His Brain, Her Brain book was just published in Spanish. It’s titled, Mente de él, mente de ella. You can find the book here.

In addition, we were equally delighted that the book was made into an unabridged audio-book by a British publisher. The two actors who narrated the book are British. Barb and I sound wonderful in a British accent. You can order the book (and listen to a British sample) here.

Events of the last month

  • Dec 9-15: Barb, Kate, and I flew to Baton Rouge to be with family for a week. We had a restful and enjoyable family week.
  • Otherwise, we were home for the Christmas season.

We hope each of you had a restful and wonderful Christmas.

Upcoming Events

  • Jan 15: The due date for my first solo novel, tentatively named Hazel Creek.
  • Jan 15-25: Walt and Barb will travel to Ethiopia to participate in a mission trip to provide medical care to an orphanage in Northern Ethiopia. We’ll also be able to do some sightseeing:
  • Axum. The legends narrated in the Kebre Nagast (“Book of Kings”) recount how the city of Axum as early as the 10th century B.C. was already the city in which the Queen of Sheba resided. We visit the ruins of Queen of Sheba’s Palace and exotic tombs of former kings, an ancient hilltop church, plus a mysterious lion’s head dating back to the Knights Templar. In addition we visit the version of the “Rosetta Stone” of the Axumite Kingdom and visit some newly-uncovered archeological sites and recently-opened tombs. We will have an opportunity to visit with the administrator of St. Mary’s to discuss the Ark of the Covenant and the significance of its keeping it safe and see the crowns of Ethiopian Kings and other treasures.
  • Lalibela: the “New Jerusalem.” We’ll visit the amazing underground monolithic churches, which were hewn completely out of pink granite rock in the 12th century, and considered one of the wonders of the world. The Ethiopians believe that they play a part in the second coming of the Lord.
  • Bahir Dar: We’ll visit the thundering Blue Nile Falls, which is locally known as Tissat Falls—100 meters wide, the water plunges for 45 meters and gives rise to steam clouds and rainbows. We’ll cross the Blue Nile in papyrus boats. We’ll also visit several islands on Lake Tana, including Tana Kirkos – the island that held the Ark of the Covenant for many years. We have made special arrangements with the monks to have artifacts from the monastery and brought out for viewing. We’ll also be visiting the islands where Nargo Silassie and Ura Kidane Mihret Monastaries are located.
  • Jan 28-30: HCJB Global Board Meeting in Colorado Springs.

His Brain, Her Brain: The Impact upon Patient, Personal, and Professional Relationships

In 2008 I was honored to be asked to present this topic to the 36th Annual Conference of the American Academy of Physician Assistants in San Antonio, TX. The talk and the handout were prepared from my and Barb’s book His Brain, Her Brain: How divinely designed differences can strengthen your marriage. I thought you might be interested in seeing a copy of the handout I prepared for the meeting. Feel free to share it with others.
