Fit over 50 Update — Go Outside for Your Health

Research published in the Journal of Positive Psychology in 2019 found that “participants who sat in an urban park for just five minutes showed significant increases in positive emotions compared to participants who sat in a windowless laboratory room.” Study co-author, Katherine D. Arbuthnott, said, “When you need an emotional boost, the fastest and easiest way is to spend a few minutes with nature. Actually, being outside is the best, but even contemplating a picture of a natural scene will make a difference.”

Visiting a park boosts your happiness like Christmas morning, new research shows

“According to a new study by researchers at the University of Vermont, city dwellers can not only overcome crankiness by spending time at a public park, but they can also be rewarded with a happiness boost akin to the jolt of euphoria one might get on Christmas morning.

“What’s more, they found, people’s moods started to improve just from the anticipation of a park outing, and the afterglow of increased happiness subsisted several hours afterward.”

When is the last time you went Forest Bathing– a Japanese concept that consists of taking the forest in through your senses?

The EPA estimates the average American spends 93 percent of their day inside (87 percent indoors; 6 percent in automobile).

Nature walks have memory-promoting effects. Being in nature reduces stress, fatigue, and anxiousness.

Another study suggested that spending 20 minutes outside is equivalent to one cup of coffee relative to energy.

I love what C.S. Lewis said regarding nature: “We do not want merely to see beauty, though, God knows, even that is bounty enough. We want something else which can hardly be put into words—to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it.”

As those who have eyes to see, nature reminds us that we have a purpose in this life, a provider during this life, and a sustainer throughout this life (Ps. 8, Matt. 6:25-34, Col. 1:15-17).
