Dear Dr. Walt,
What are the benefits of tart cherry juice?
—Cherry Lover in Connecticut
Dear Sour Sap Seeker,
The Internet is packed with folks trying to sell tart or sour (or even sweet) cherry juice, concentrate, extract, or pills for a wide variety of ailments including joint and muscle pain, poor sleep, treating high blood pressure or sugar, preventing gout, improving thinking or memory, or even improving overall health and vitality.
However, the evidence behind these supposed benefits is mixed at best.
Because there is no evidence supporting its effectiveness for any of these problems, I don’t recommend it.
