Wednesday’s Ask Dr. Walt — Preserving Fish Oil

Dear Dr. Walt,

Is it okay to freeze fish oil capsules to keep them from becoming rancid over time?

Dear Aromatic,

According to the experts at Consumer Lab, “You can certainly freeze fish oil. This will not adversely affect the oil and will help keep it fresh.”

All omega-3 fatty acids (including fish oil, krill oil, and algal oil) can spoil, so it’s also best to keep them out of heat and light. In addition, refrigeration can also help prolong freshness and is particularly important with bottles containing liquid versions of fish oil.
