A patient asks, “What do I do about dry skin during the winter? Even using lotion I end up with dry, cracked hands and itchy skin.” Well, walking in a winter wonderland may be pretty, but your skin doesn’t always feel that way. Winter air dries your skin—and so does the heat in our homes. The combination can lead to a season of discomfort. Here’s what I suggest:Use a good skin moisturizer—throughout the day. This means keeping it in your car, your purse and anywhere you go. Once in the morning just won’t do. Talk to your doctor or dermatologist to find the products they recommend.
You can also use a humidifier in your home. The extra moisture will help your skin, and as a bonus, help with chapped lips and a stuffy nose.
With a little extra effort, you can give winter skin the cold shoulder.
