Family Update
We are in the midst of a most wonderful August. Daytime highs are in the high seventies to low eighties and at night the thermometer is in the sleeping-comfortable sixties. It’s a great time to catch up on yard work, grill in the evenings, and enjoy dinner together on our outdoor deck. Wonderful.
Our adopted cat, Jackson Lee Larimore, AKA “Jack,” has totally taken over the house and Barb’s heart. One night this month Barb woke me. It must have been 2 am. “Move over,” she commanded. “Jack needs more room.” Unbelievable! Of course, I moved. I sensed it was move over or move out!
We hear from Scott and Jennifer that young Sarah Elisabeth is growing and developing normally and moving rapidly toward her arrival in November. She has her Pops prayers most every morning.
Scott has picked up a job as the lab manager of Jennifer’s lab at Emory. He can do his work while Jennifer is home with Anna Kate and vice versa. The extra income has been an answered prayer for them both.
Anna Kate flew threw her first birthday, and is now heading toward 17 months. Scott is such a better dad that I was at his age. He and Jen are both amazing parents.
Kate is doing well and the bookstore in which she works at Focus on the Family is keeping very busy with all the summer visitors. But, she tells us she likes it when it’s busy. She had a few down days when her soul sister, Caroline, and her husband, Jeremy, said goodbye to go serve at a mission hospital in Kenya this next year. Kate is hoping to master Skype to keep up with her best friend.
Barb is delighted now that we’ve finished the renovation of our master bath. She loves to decorate and renovate, and has a gift for each. Now the master shower and closet are a bit more spacious and practical. She could not be more delighted.
A sad bump in my life road occurred this last month. For the last year I’ve LOVED being able to serve the Mission Medical Clinic in Colorado Springs as Associate Medical Director and a staff family physician.
Unfortunately, the grant that paid my time was cut by the State of Colorado, so I sadly ended my time there in July.
But, the Lord was gracious and led me to Oak Springs Family Medicine in the Springs. It is owned by family physicians Gary and Beth Jewell. I’ve begun work there a couple of days a week and, so far, it’s gone very well.
And, I’ve finally begun work on my first solo novel. It’s tentatively titled “Hazel Creek” and is a story of five sisters who have to care for one another after their parents tragically die. The real Hazel Creek is located in the current Smoky Mountain National Park, but in the 1930’s, when this book is set, it was a wilderness settlement.
It should be a lot of fun to write. But, I have to have it ready to turn in by December 15th! YIKES!!
So, it’s off to write I go!
Publication Update
TSI: The Gabon Virus, Walt’s First Novel to be Released August 18th
The first of the “Time Scene Investigators” novels will be released this month. The novel received a GREAT endorsement from New York Times Bestselling novelist, Debbie Macomber:

I was on the edge of my seat from the very first page of The Gabon Virus and didn’t breathe again until I turned the last page. Fast-paced and gripping, this book will make us all think, “This could happen.”

Here’s a synopsis of the book:

An ancient disease, a modern pandemic, and the one person who offers hope for a cure has been dead for 350 years . . .

In 1666, a horrible disease took the lives of almost every person in Eyam (pronounced Eem), England. Helping the sick and the dying was the mysterious and ghostlike Blue Monk, whose strange appearance terrified even those who were comforted by him.

More than three centuries later the disease has returned, more virulent than before. Every day more people are infected; every hour more die.

The lives of millions rest in the hands of a bio-team — the Time Scene Investigators — that studies history to find cures for modern diseases. But the newest member of the team, Dr. Mark Carlson, has suffered a heartbreaking loss.

With every tick of the clock the world approaches a global pandemic. A race against time becomes a race across continents — to find a frightened boy who is carrying and spreading the disease wherever he goes, to thwart the machinations of corporate greed and fanatical sabotage, and to find the connection between a great tragedy of the past and a potential catastrophe of the present. Our present.

This book may become tomorrow’s headline.

I hope you’ll get a copy as soon as it comes out, and if you like it, I hope you’ll recommend it to your family, friends, and colleagues at work.
Also, you order autographed copies here.
Dr. Walt to book signing in Colorado Springs on September 12th
For those of you in live in Colorado, Paul McCusker and I will be signing copies of our new novel, TSI: The Gabon Virus, on Saturday, September 12, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
We’ll be signing at Barnes & Noble Booksellers Store at 1565 Briargate Boulevard, Colorado Springs, CO, 80920. The store phone is (719) 266-9960. I hope you can be there.
Dr. Walt has a chapter in Joe Gibb’s best-seller
I was so pleased last summer with 3-time Super Bowl winning NFL coach and 3-time NASCAR winning race team owner, Coach Joe Gibbs called and asked me to pen a chapter on health for his book Game Plan for Life: Your Personal Playbook for Success.
The other co-authors are a veritable who’s who in Christian academic circles and include: Jerry Jenkins, Dr. Ken Boa, Dr. John Lennox, Josh McDowell, Ravi Zacharias, Chuck Colson, Don Meredith, Ron Blue, Dr. Os Guinness, Dr. Randy Alcorn, and Dr. Tony Evans. Wow, what a line-up.
Anyway, the book was released this month and previewed at #6 on the New York Times Bestseller List. What a great start.

New Review of Bryson City Tales: Stories of a Doctor’s First Year of Practice in the Smoky Mountains
This review was published in the Webster Christian School Library Log on July 12.

Dr. Walt Larimore, fresh from Duke University, moves his family to Bryson City to join a rural medical practice.

Bryson City, nestled in the Smoky Mountains, is a close-knit community reluctant to embrace new people and change. It is a beautiful place with breath-taking scenery, cozy inns with delicious food shared with friends, and a simple wholesome way of life.

Dr Larimore takes us on a tumultuous journey through his first year as he wins the respect and friendship of the crusty medical personnel and his new patients. This book is filled with much humor, his vibrant faith, and also shows the bright and dark realities of country medicine. Dr Larimore entertains us with amazing tales (some of which are true), blesses us, and lets us see why small-town medicine is full of unexpected risks and rewards.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommended it to several people. Since I work in a hospital I found it especially interesting.

Nice Review of Bryson City Seasons: More Tales of a Doctor’s Practice in the Smoky Mountains
This review was also published in the Webster Christian School Library Log on July 12.

Welcome to the next book about Bryson City! Dr. Larimore whisks us along on a journey through the seasons of another year in Bryson City.

He had learned much about small-town politics, jealousies, the art of rural medicine, the heartbreak of making mistakes and incorrect diagnoses. Many of the folks were natives and most of the physicians and nurses were in their third to fourth decade of practice so they didn’t “hanker to outsiders.” But now Dr. Larimore is being accepted as credible, caring , friendly and willing to learn.

He has brought in an old friend and classmate from medical school to join him in opening their own medical practice. Once again the author paints a collage of small town events, people, customs, and faith.

Humor fills the pages but also Dr. Larimore encounters serious difficulties and tragedies that bring tears. His very vibrant faith is evident as he treats his patients. His captivating stories will keep you entertained but you will also learn something.

Highly recommended.

HomeLife will be publishing two brief articles on the topic of Prescription Drug Addiction that were penned by Dr. Walt. Broadcast Update
Dr. Walt and Barb were featured on the Focus on the Family Radio Broadcast in July
Dr. James Dobson’s interview with Barb and me on our book, His Brain, Her Brain, was broadcast on the Focus on the Family radio program in the US on Monday, July 6. You can listen to the broadcast here. You can order autographed copies of the book here.
Events of the last month
July 14: I had the privilege of spending the morning with the students at the Focus on the Family Institute in Colorado Springs. I facilitated a workshop on the Biblical view of sex, ethical forms of birth control, and divorce proofing a marriage. It was great fun to be with these future leaders.
July 19-25: Barb and I served as volunteers at Kanakuk Colorado, a Christian camp for teens. I served as camp physician and Barb helped in the clinic. Our time there was refreshing, relaxing, and a blessing. However, just two weeks before an epidemic of the H1N1 Swine Flu hit and at one time nearly half the Kamp was in quarantine. Unfortunately, they had to send nearly 1/3 of the kids home. But, our week was a breeze. Two cases needing stitches, one sinus infection, and one ear infection.
July 28-29: Barb and I flew to Las Vegas where I made a presentation on Childhood Obesity at the National Medical Association’s Annual Convention and Annual Scientific Assembly. It was 113 degrees and unbearably hot. We’re glad we only scheduled two days and one night there. However, we were upgraded to a suite at the Mandalay Resort, so that was very nice.
Upcoming Events
Aug 17-21, I’ll be serving as a Visiting Professor at the In His Image Family Medicine Residency Program in Tulsa, OK.
Otherwise, I’ll be at home seeing patients, writing, and trying to work through a “honey do” list.

  1. Patricia Miller says:

    Hello,
This was my first time to your blog and I found it very interesting. I enjoyed reading the family update and also the information provided about health issues and concerns was very informative. I was directed to this blog via a link that was sent to me by the librarian at Webster Christian School (also a great friend!). She was so excited that my reviews of your two books were featured in this newsletter! This is a great honor. We are so curious as to how you found out about them. The librarian, just this summer, enrolled the school in edublog and I had raved about your two books which she had suggested I might enjoy. They were new to the library and no one had read them yet. She knew I worked in a hospital clinical lab and thought I might find them interesting. She was right! I loved them and she asked me to write a review. I also suggested my husband read them and he thoroughly enjoyed them. As a pastor at our church his focus is pastoral care and several years ago he took a year of full time chaplaincy training at the local university hospital. He now works as a per diem chaplain at three local hospitals. The books are so humorous, interesting, and there were situations he could relate to as a chaplain. After reading book two I looked on line to see if there was a third Bryson City book and promptly ordered Bryson City Secrets and plan to write about that one, too. Again it was delightful and the delicate subject of sexual assault was presented very well. I applaud your family for exposing this difficult situation and how God graciously brought you all through it to His glory.
Again, I just want to thank you for the honor of appearing in your newsletter and look forward to your next novel!

  2. Dr. Walt says:

Thanks to you for the wonderful review. The reviews were sent to me by “Google Alerts.” Count me very grateful. Hope you enjoy “Bryson City Secrets.” And, don’t miss my first novel, “TSI: The Gabon Virus,” which is scheduled for release on August 18.
