Family Update

Sorry to be a bit late getting this month’s newsletter to you. My bad. But, I was working day and night putting the final touches to my second novel, Time Scene Investigators: The Influenza Bomb, with co-author and friend Paul McCusker. We’ll turn in the manuscript on Monday, July 13th. Woo Hoo! The first novel in this series, Time Scene Investigators: The Gabon Virus, will be out this August. You can read more about it later in this newsletter.

Barb and I were saddened to learn that the Colorado state grant that provided for my reimbursement as the Associate Medical Director at the Mission Medical Clinic in Colorado Springs has been discontinued due to state budget cutbacks. Therefore, I will not be working there after August or September. At this point we’re praying about and considering several options, including my working part time at one or more local family physician offices. It’s likely that Barb will continue to volunteer at the clinic.

We had a wonderful family vacation at Barb’s Mom and Dad’s beach home in Pensacola Beach, Florida. We’ve been taking annual vacations there since the year before we were married, 1972. This year’s vacation was marked by a special event. We celebrated Barb’s Mom’s 80th birthday and her aunt’s 83rd birthday. It was a special time indeed.

Publication Update

Dr. Walt’s First Novel finally receives title

After months of going back and forth or a wide variety of title and cover options, the marketing gurus at Simon and Schuster, and Howard Books, have decided to name my first novel, co-written with Paul McCusker . . . the drumroll please . . . TSI: The Gabon Virus

The book will be released in August and autographed copies will be available at www.DrWalt.com/books.

Longtime readers of this newsletter know that the novel has previously carried names such as TSI: The Blue Monk, TSI: The Secret of the Blue Monk, TSI: The Eyam Factor, and TSI: The Ahaz Virus.

Of course, “TSI” stands for “Time Scene Investigators,” which is a fictional crack team of NIH forensic scientists who have to solve medical mysteries from the past to prevent modern medical calamities. I hope you pick up a copy and enjoy reading it.

Dr. Walt’s First Novel Has Received its First Review

Here’s the first published review of The Gabon Virus. I could not have been more delighted.

The action never stops in this fast-paced . . . super thriller

Under the ice and snow of Greenland lies a top secret research laboratory filled with all the deadly diseases known to man. Something happens in one of the labs allowing the genetically engineered super strain of the Ebola virus escaping into the entire facility forcing the government to blow it up. In the African country Gabon, a cult led by David Mosley is infected with this lethal strain; all of them commit suicide to end the horror except the leader’s son Aaron.

Aaron is a carrier spreading the disease wherever he goes and leaving behind horrific agonizing deaths. A task force mobilizes seeking the carrier while in England they seek a vaccine, but need someone with the disease. Their efforts lead them to the village of Eyam where the Black Death decimated the place in the seventeenth century that isolated itself while the legendary Blue Monk administered to the ill and dying. The scientists feel there are some similarities with today’s outbreak and the cases in 1666 so they seek the grave of the Blue Monk who’s DNA may provide a cure for the modern day epidemic. Time is running out as the pandemic virus threatens to make humanity virtually extinct.

The action never stops in this fast-paced thriller that sends a cautionary message without preaching. Mindful of Hoffman’s Outbreak, the plot cleverly uses the real tragic history of the Ebola virus that killed several people in Gabon in 2001 and the seventeenth century Black Plague assault on the villagers of Eyam. , Although the lead characters are not fully developed, they bring heart and soul to their desperate search to find the Blue Monk’s remains. The TSI team makes the science of disease epidemics especially viruses easy to understand but never dumbed down; that is the core of a super thriller that is timely with the Swine Flu outbreak.

New documentary features Dr. Walt and exposes abortifacient qualities of the birth control pill

A documentary called “28 Days on the Pill” has been released that “seeks to expose the abortifacient properties of the birth control pill.”

The documentary explains that “many forms of birth control pills contain progesterone, which thins the endometrium, the walls of the uterus, which in turn causes it to become inhospitable to newly conceived human life, causing an abortion.”

I was one of a number of those interviewed for this excellent documentary. You can see a seven-minute clip of the documentary here.

You can read my blog about this DVD here.

His Brain, Her Brain soars on Amazon.com

After Barb and I were featured on the daily Focus on the Family radio broadcast, our book, His Brain, Her Brain: How divinely designed differences can strengthen your marriage, soared on Amazon.com, reaching the top 125 books sold in America.

Dr. Walt published in Significant Living Magazine

Dr. Walt published in HomeLife Magazine

I’ve also had an article published in HomeLife Magazine. It’s titled Your Child’s Doctor is In: Asking the right questions can help you find the right physician. It’s in the July edition, on pages 64-65.

Also, in an earlier newsletter, I told you about another article I had published in HomeLife Magazine, in the March, titled Is Your Teen Abusing Prescription Drugs? You can view that article online in a sample copy of the entire magazine found here.

Lintball Leo keeps on rolling

We’re delighted to have received notice from ZonderKidz that Lintball Leo’s Not-So-Stupid Questions About Your Body, a book for boys 8-12 years old, has just gone into its 11th printing. Wow. None of my other twenty-or-so books have had this many printings, and I’m delighted parents are finding it so helpful for their boys.

You can read a dozen or so reviews of the book here.

Dr. Walt has chapter published in a new college textbook

I recently was notified that a tutorial I had written concerning my research on childhood obesity for my book, SuperSized Kids: How to protect your child from the obesity threat, has just been published in a college textbook on statistics.

Events of the last month

Most of June, I was working on the final touches to my second novel, Time Scene Investigators: The Influenza Bomb, with co-author and friend Paul McCusker. The first novel in this series, Time Scene Investigators: The Gabon Virus, will be out this August.

June 1-6: Barb visited her family in Baton Rouge. She and her sister worked day and night to put the finishing touches on a renovation they helped their mom and dad complete.

June 10: I spoke at the Mesa Hills Baptist Church in Colorado Springs on the topic of “God’s Design for Highly Healthy People.” The room was packed and the evening was a blessing for me.

June 14-17: Barb and I had the privilege to serve the staff and campers at Young Life’s Crooked Creek Ranch. It was a blessing to see the dedicated staff and volunteers pour their lives into campers from across the nation. Their goal was to give the kids “the best week of their lives” while “earning the right to tell them about Jesus.” It was a terrific time for us.

June 25-28: Barb and I flew to Tulsa and then drove out to the Western Hills Resort for the Graduation and Summer Retreat of the In His Image Family Medicine Residency Program. It was a time of welcoming the ten new interns, who were just finishing their orientation. It was a time of celebration for the ten graduating interns. The second year residents had to present a research project and I helped judge these presentations. And, of course, the graduating third year residents were celebrating the completion of their training. Because they are trained not only as family physicians, but also receive theological training, they graduate, but are also commissioned and ordained into ministry. It’s a retreat that always deeply blesses us. We’re honored to be a small part of this special family.

July 1-7: Kate, Barb, and I were on our annual family vacation at Pensacola Beach, Florida. We were sad that Scott, Jennifer, and Anna Kate were not able to join us this year. But, our week was restful and blessed.

Upcoming Events

July 19-25: Barb and I will serve as volunteers at Kanakuk Colorado, a Christian camp for teens. I will serve as camp physician.

July 28-29: Barb and I will fly to Las Vegas where I will make a presentation on Childhood Obesity at the National Medical Association’s Annual Convention.

You can get more information on many of my upcoming events here.
