Study Finds Lesbians 50 Times More Likely to Self-Harm (nothing gay about this story)

LifeSiteNews.com is reporting that the habit of “self-harming” is 50 times more likely to occur in lesbians than in the general population of women. They quote a Scottish study showing 20 percent of lesbian and bisexual women, of a total of 500 women surveyed in Scotland had deliberately harmed themselves in the last year, compared to 0.4 per cent of the general population.

Unethical retinal transplant with fetal cells boosts vision — but at what cost? (This will make you sick)

 

The BBC is reporting that an experimental transplant of fetal cells into the eyes of patients with failing sight improved vision in most of them. The retinal cells, taken from aborted fetuses, were implanted  into 10 people with retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. The American Journal of Ophthalmology study found seven had better - although still seriously impaired - vision.

Why time off is time well spent for your health

USA Today columnist, Kim Painter, writes today about “Vacation deprivation,” as it has been dubbed by Expedia.com. The phenomena has been spreading for years as Americans’ vacations get shorter or are skipped entirely. But this year’s high travel costs, flying hassles and spooky economy may be creating a “perfect storm” that keeps people hunkered down as never before. Believe it or not, this may negatively impact your health.

Recommendations for Milk for Babies Changed

WebMD Health News is reporting on a major change in baby nutrition advice that’s gone nearly unnoticed. This week, the American Academy of Pediatrics changed its recommendation that weaned babies be fed whole milk until they’re 2 years old. Instead, after weaning, kids at risk of being overweight — or whose families have a history of obesity, heart disease, or high cholesterol — should get reduced-fat 2% milk between 12 months and 2 years of age.

Vitamin D tests soar as deficiency, diseases linked

USA Today is reporting that testing for vitamin D levels, once uncommon, has skyrocketed as medical studies raise awareness about vitamin D deficiencies. Physicians agree that they’re increasingly using the blood test to find out whether their patients are low on the vital vitamin.

Fruit juice tied to modest rise in diabetes risk

Reuters Health is reporting a studying showing that women who want to ward off type 2 diabetes should load their plates with green leafy vegetables and whole fruits, but perhaps stay away from fruit juice.
