Multiple abortions increase risk of giving birth prematurely

The NPR “Shots” blog reports, “Women who had multiple abortions before giving birth to a first child were more likely to have that child very prematurely or to deliver a child with a low birth weight, according to” a study published in the European journal Human Reproduction.

HealthDay reports, “Researchers looked at more than 300,000 Finnish mothers and found that 10.3 percent had had one induced abortion between 1996 and 2008, 1.5 percent had two abortions, and 0.3 percent had three or more abortions before a first birth.”

MedPage Today reports, “The odds ratio for very preterm birth (less than 28 weeks) increased from 1.19 with one induced abortion (95% CI 0.98 to 1.44) to 2.78 for women who had had three or more abortions (95% CI 1.48 to 5.24) before giving birth for the first time.”
