Study shows decrease in trans fat levels after FDA label requirement

The Washington Post reports on a study, which found that “the amount of trans fat in the American bloodstream fell by more than half after the Food and Drug Administration required food manufacturers to label how much of the unhealthful ingredient is in their products.”Commenters critical to my generally pro-FDA stances in the past are invited to comment on this obvious success. After all, the decline is said to be “unusually big and abrupt,” and “strongly suggests government regulation was effective in altering a risk factor for heart disease for a broad swath of the population.”

The discovery was found when researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed “blood drawn as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which interviews and examines a sample of Americans at least once a decade.”

USA Today quotes Hubert Vesper, a chemist and lead author of CDC study, who said, “This indicates substantial progress that should help lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in the US. We are encouraged by this.”

The New York Times reports in its “Well” blog, “Christopher Portier, the director of the … National Center for Environmental Health, added in a statement that the findings ‘demonstrate the effectiveness of efforts in reducing blood trans fatty acids and highlight that further reductions in the levels of trans fats must remain an important public health goal.'”

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel “Health & Science Today” blog reports that the research letter is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

    Walt,
What do you think about the whole foods plant based diet suggested in the DVD entitled “Forks over Knives”? The research done by the docs seems pretty clear. Thanks for any info you can share. (By the way I was able to watch the DVD on Netflix)

  2. Karen,

Like Scripture says, “Any story sounds true until someone tells the other side and sets the record straight.” (Proverbs 18:17 TLB) You may want to check out the other side of this slickly done PR story. You can do that here or here. My gut is that the truth is somewhere between these poles.

    Walt
