Family Update

TWO of my books release this month:

1) My first solo novel: Hazel Creek

I spent over 10 years researching and two years writing this novel, which is based upon stories I learned when I practiced Family Medicine in Bryson City, NC, in the early 1980’s.

  • You can read about the book and see some of its endorsements here.
  • You can currently order autographed copies here.
  • You can also preorder the book from Amazon, B&N, or CBD.

Chris Fabry, author of ECPA Best Fiction winner Almost Heaven, says, “Walt Larimore isn’t just a great storyteller. He paints word pictures that linger like country wood smoke—so strong you can’t get it out of your mind. Once you experience Hazel Creek, you’ll never want to leave.”

Miralee Ferrell, author of Love Finds You in Sundance, WY, writes, “Walt Larimore’s Hazel Creek stands right along with Katherine Marshall’s Christy or Francine Rivers’ The Last Sin Eater. This book will stir your emotions at a deep level, entertain, and open your eyes to a different time and world far back in the Great Smokey Mountains. I hated to see it end, and I’m thrilled to give Hazel Creek my highest recommendation.”

While Julie L. Cannon, author of I’ll Be Home for Christmas, reports, “This captivating story took me to a simpler time when humans were closer to creation and to the creator. I found in it echoes of Christian classics—Catherine Marshall’s Christy, for one—and that puts Larimore’s book in the best of company. Being in the Great Smoky Mountains wilderness when it was still wild nourished my soul!”

2) The Ultimate Guys’ Body Book: Not-so-studid questions about your body

This book is written for boys heading into, or already in puberty, and also for their parents … particularly their dads.

  •  You can read about the book and see some of its endorsements here.
  • You can autographed copies here once I have them in stock.
  • You can also preorder the book from Amazon, B&N, or CBD.

You can read reviews of the book below.

2) Great Reviews for The Ultimate Guy’s Body Book

The Ultimate Guy’s Body Book has received its first national review – this one by the Washington Post:

The Washington Post, Monday, February 13, 2012

“The Ultimate Guys’ Body Book,” by Walt Larimore

For parents who dread talking with their adolescent sons about their changing bodies, Walt Larimore’s book may be a help. Larimore, a family-practice physician, offers a series of 30 questions that he answers in a teen-friendly way with medical evidence and a good sense of humor. He starts out easy, with what a growth spurt is and how to get bigger muscles; then he gets to the issues that many people are reluctant to discuss, such as the ins and outs of puberty and what’s going on down there. With witty answers rooted in facts, Larimore’s guide can help ease an uncomfortable situation when mothers or fathers have “the talk” with their sons.

NEW BOOK FOR BOYS

An one from Kirkus Review:

THE ULTIMATE GUYS’ BODY BOOK: Not-So-Stupid Questions About Your Body

Review Issue Date: February 15, 2012

“Dr. Walt” offers advice with a Christian perspective for boys wondering about their bodies as they enter puberty. More specifically, this is a volume aimed at Christian fathers of boys ages 10 to 13, so fathers can be ready with answers to sometimes tricky questions.

Topics are covered through 30 questions on how boys’ bodies change, how much sleep is necessary, what if friends try alcohol, how to avoid pornography, what’s wrong with tattoos and body piercings and even three questions about testicles.

It’s purportedly information readers can trust, presented “through the lens of a biblical worldview,” all reviewed by the Christian Medical Association. God is the common denominator behind all answers here. Differences in penis size? It’s “the way God designed each one of us.” Masturbation? “Sexual fantasies are forbidden for Christians.” In Larimore’s perspective, “God invented sex,” but only “to be experienced between a husband and a wife in marriage.”

Parents wanting to stay within the confines of Christian doctrine will find this volume informative. Other readers may want to go elsewhere to find a guide more open to a more encompassing worldview. A useful guide for readers wanting a Christian look at boys’ physical and sexual development.

3) Bryson City feedback

Barb received this nice note about my Bryson City books:

I ordered the three Bryson City books and read them and I cannot tell you how much it meant to me to read those books and everything you all went through.

The stories touched my heart and soul and I am so glad I ordered a set for myself.

I have shared them with another friend who now lives in Lake Lure, not far from where I grew up, in Hendersonville, and she told me the other day that she has finished the first book and is looking forward to the next.

Thanks to you and your husband for sharing such heart-warming stories and for touching my heart in such a wonderful way.

4) Article in AMA News on Alternative Medicine

I was interviewed for an article on alternative remedies and natural medications (herbs, vitamins, and supplements) for AMA News titled, “Weighing Alternative Remedies.” You can read the article here.

5) Video Interview about SuperSized Kids

Someone sent me a notice that they found a video interview of me by Constance Rhodes, the founder of FINDINGbalance. It’s on my book, SuperSized Kids: How to protect your child from the obesity threat.

If anyone finds PART ONE on the Internet, let me know. I can’t find it.

Events of the last month
  • Feb 8, I attended a Life Network Board meeting in Colorado Springs. I enjoy serving on this board with some incredible men and women who all share a precious heart to minister to families in crisis.
  • Feb 10-12, I taught at the Christian Medical and Dental Association’s Winter Conference in Bristol, TN. The crowd was small, but enthusiastic, and I’m convinced just the right people were there.
  • Feb 15-19, Barb and I traveled to Atlanta to visit with Scott, Jennifer, and their girls. We had a wonderful time with this amazing family and incredible kids. Think I’m biased?
  • Feb 20-24, Barb was in Baton Rouge again serving her mom. Her mom is doing very well just a month after losing her husband and best friend of over 60 years.
  • Feb 24-25, I was in Greenville, SC, teaching for the PreMedical Group at Bob Jones University. Had a great time with some amazing premed students. Great kids. Also, deeply enjoyed fellowship with a dear friend of over 30 years who is now teaching there, Marc Chetta, MD, and his wonderful family.
